About Tarantino: I think that, even if he wants his movies to look like older movies he loved back in the days, they are totally different affairs. Nobody can deny that Kill Bill was eclectic and unique, even if it contained a whopping load of references to other movies. It was an awesome film, and the proof that simple, clever entertainment still works in a theater.
Improviser's top rated site (and one of the top rated YTMND's of all time) is a pretty good textbook case of Frederick Jameson-style postmodern pastiche. This is the essential criticism leveled against Tarantino, ie. his films are slick recontextualizations of tropes from other media, so my comparison and accusation of mild hypocrisy is not out of hand. You accuse me of formulating a false metonymy, and I call you a sophist of the first order. By the way, I love you, but please get the f*ck over yourself.
Recontextualizing clips from various media, which is one of the primary thrusts of this website, is essentially post-modern. This is true...and not just of my site. Don't think that thought hasn't ever crossed my mind. It is a bit constricting to have to rely on what others have created, an essentially finite source, as your sources. Yes it would be preferable to create your own entirely new work..but unfortunately that is not always practical, given the enormous amount of time or money this may take.
So using existing professionally recorded audio or video clips is just terribly convenient for the one-man show ytmnder isn't it? Now that doesn't mean in other artistic endeavours I leech material of others and am essentially a hack. Quite the opposite actually. YTMND is unique though...and I do consider this website a valid means of artistic expression, just as valid as any concert hall or art gallery. But comparing YTMND to a feature film (Tarantino) is a bit of a stretch. Also, fawkes.
A bit more goes into a screenplay than into a ytmnd. A bit more goes into most scenes than goes into 99.9% of ytmnds. Now, some ytmnds rise above the level of your average scenes in a movie, but I think you'd have to compare a large collection of ytmnds to a tarantino film. The best comparison would be a series of ytmnds to a short, but Tarantino doesn't make many shorts. So, really, YTMND vs. Spike Jonze. Winner, Spike. Hands down. Sorry. That's just the way it is. Spike owns all of our grandmas.
Tarantino recreates cinematic styles that were themselves already campy to begin with. So he is essentially paying homage to inferior films, instead of forging new territory. To me this is completely different than YTMND-style recontextualization. We are pillaging sources while he is recreating them. Not to mention the fact that a film takes a whole crew thousands of hours to make...compared to a few hours to make a ytmnd...if that.
What's with these automatic assumptions that because Tarantino is a fan of campy films that campy films are bad, campy film influenced styles are automatically bad, and Tarantino films are campy? I would not agree with any of those 3 assessments. Campy movies have their own plot devices to move stories along which I much prefer to most typical hollywood devices. And, honestly, is "I'm going to kill 200 people to save my girlfriend" really "higher art" than "I'm going to kill 200 people. Bitches."?
I've always felt like some filmmakers attempt to tell stories on both the literal level and on the figurative level, while Lynch merely does away with the literal. It's not necessarily "deep" unless you want to call it a "deep surface". There are no characters, there are only symbols. And, sometimes Lynch just completely does away with humor. I know it's not kosher to view humor as its own artistic element, but Tarantino has that going for him. Without humor, Kafka would be forgotten. And I love Kafka.
I have actually. But seriously, talking about Tarantino in the same thread as Bergman is a joke really. You can't really compare a man who spent his life in the theater and film and became a giant in the art film world to a guy who worked in a video store and decided to jot down some "clever" dialogue one day.

I really loved that movie. Haven't seen any of his others. To go a little OT, I'd like to commend to everyone's attention Kurosawa's "Ikiru" - a movie which had me bawling like a little girl by the end. I'm absolutely serious - as hokey and corny as it sounds, Ikiru really touched my soul. One scene in particular, I had to watch a dozen times until the sun came up.
