In the wee hours

Just chiming in to assert my presence. Bug fixes/new feature/news inside.

I think I've tracked down and fixed the weird view count bug, it was only a display issue so I recalculated all the corrupted data from source. If you notice anything weird let me know please.

I also spent some time fixing/improving the /feed page. Once I test some more, I'll make it a save options to cookies and start making the privacy features actually work. So if you have any friends then go check it out.

One major new feature is the "Meebo Bar". It basically allows you to chat with your YTMND pals (as well as AIM and all the other services Meebo provides). Anyway, to try it out go into your options, enable it and refresh. It's not enabled by default to avoid all the nerd rage I'd get.

Sorry I don't have more for you; I've been working on a full-time contract job since the first week of 2010 (other than the few weeks off I took to launch 2.0). I haven't had much time to give YTMND some TLC; but the good news is that with the new ad placements, YTMND is doing well enough to pay its bills and as such I've decided to try to push the few people left on YTMND into doing something good for the world.

For those of you that haven't heard of Kiva, it's a site where you can give microloans to people in third world countries. The way it works, you loan a small amount of money to people in places like Cambodia, and they use it to start farms, food markets etc; over the next year or so, you get paid back small chunks of your loan, with interest. When all is said and done, you've loaned a stranger some money that you would have spent on POGs or whatever junk you kids buy these days, been repaid and in addition helped people in a nation disparaged by poverty prosper.

So from here on out, if you use Kiva and forward the reciept to max@ytmnd.com or support@ytmnd.com, we'll put whatever amount you lend on Kiva towards site sponsorship on a YTMND of your liking. While you're at it, I've started a YTMND "team" there so the two of you with souls should join it. Everyone else will continue making KFC/Watermelon jokes while you are busy feeling superior.

Anyway, I wrote this news post a few days ago and mid-way through my internet connection went out so I decided to drink my way through it, hopefully some of it made sense. I'll update with a new contest by the end of the weekend.

A lot of the site assets are behaving this way. You have to add their extension or in the case of .jpg they are linked as .jpeg which results in a 404.

You earn INTEREST on that shit? That's pretty fucking retarded. It's like a IMF summer camp for rich kids. I like the intention, but what's wrong with just giving them the money?

That's the difference between a loan and a donation. Although, some donations are tax deductible, so we get paid for good intentions either way.

No, Kiva lenders DO NOT make interest. If you lend $25, you get back a maximum of $25. The person taking the loan out pays interest to the local field partner (some local financial group). Generally, the more dangerous the country, the higher the interest rate. So in Mongolia it's like 25% and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo it's 80%.

The real strength with Kiva versus donation charities is the long term involvement. With a donation, you send $25 once and usually forget about it. With Kiva, you donate $25 and get repaid over a year, usually with an email update once a month. This keeps you involved and really makes it feel like you're personally invested in helping the individual out. You want them to succeed! You stay updated on where your money goes and how it's being used. And once your $25 is repaid, you're encouraged to find someone new to lend the money back out. Accountability is probably better with the micro-loans. You know exactly who the money is going to.

I'm with gr33nsc33n. I think it's great that Max is doing something like this, but my internal red flag went up half-way through the sign-up process for some reason. I came back here to read the comments section and see if anyone else shared my suspicion. I would love to involve myself with something like this if I knew it were absolutely legitimate - and, Kiva might be, but I'm not about to take a chance.

Kiva is legitimate (Bill Clinton, who like many ex-presidents is big into the 3rd world charity thing, has publicly supported it. Yet *however* it is not as romantic and simple as it seems to be. One of the main things is the cost of transmitting the "story" of the poor entrepreneur and his photograph on a rinky-dink internet connection from the jungles of Gabon, as well as progress updates. It would be more efficient to simply loan money out to the agencies themselves, but the problem is nobody feels good about lending money to a faceless acronym. Do the ends justify the means? Max surely means well, and I personally find the idea of loaning money to the people of the 3rd world rather than showering corrupt governments with aid fosters better habits. It is a more dignified transaction for both the giver and recipient.

You could potentially cut your taxes by ~25% (Using canadian figures and regulations, im not sure how the charitable donation tax credit works elsewhere) by donating your entire income, assuming that putting your entire earnings towards this is realistic. In canada there would be no tax on the interest you earn, either. You could easily put yourself in a lower income bracket this way and potentially cut the amount of taxes payable by ~35%. Shit is soo cash until the gov't finds out and audits you and this potentially fraudulent charity.

I realize it's there, I just don't like the new set up where I have to go looking for comments that have been made on my sites, especially old ones. The old way, new comments were clearly visible from my profile page as soon as I went there. You couldn't miss them. Now I can't see them without going fishing for them and people can have a full conversation on a site of mine without me knowing.

A perfect example of this is on the site I made this observation on. It belongs to daily user who did not realize for a week that 3 people were talking on a site of his. Its so easy to miss now.

I like the idea of the social enhancements max made, but a couple of the changes to the old way seem to have decreased the very social factor they were meant to increase.

Easily my favorite new feature of YTMND 2.0 is the ability to have a tiled animated gif in the background with a gif running simultaneously in the foreground. It's pretty much the greatest thing ever. So the contest is simple: make a site that makes use of this new feature in an interesting, creative, or comical way. No other limitations, go nuts.

It seems to me that every single site made in the last few days is half-unoriginal (or 1/3 if you want to count both images) because of the no-new-audio bug. And yeah I'm not counting the originality of the ideas themselves, because then it could go all the way back to 2004.

Anyway... max fix the audio uploading.

Only shit in a hand basket!

I was out in the front yard doing some light yard-work when I got stung not once, but twice by Wasps! I have no idea what kind of Wasps they were nor do I care.

They stung my left arm and around my elbow. When they first stung me, I was in epic pain. I looked up online what I can do, but the internet told me to basicly suck it up for the next couple of days and I should feel it for the next week.

Well, see ya’ later!

So I guess you've just given up now on browser compatibiliy max? None of the old sites load at all in ie and most of the new ones run at 1 frame per second. It sucks to have to load firefox everytime I want to come here.

A long time ago there was a hidden valley called the valley of the rainbow. Where the animals lived in peace. This valley was the only place in the land which had never known the fear of the seven goblins. Each goblin was named after his own colour: red orange yellow green blue indigo and violet. The seven goblins lived by eating the colours from rainbows. For that reason they were known as the Rainbow Goblins. They were always looking for rainbows to suck the colors from and so to fill their bellies. One day the rainbow goblins learned of the valley of the rainbow. It gave them an infinite appetite just thinking about the great banquet they could enjoy there. Immediately the gathered their tools and set off in search of the legendary valley. It didn't matter to them to roam about the steep hills or to climb up the high mountains. Whenever difficulties arose concerning their journey they just thought of the delicious colours ahead. The sun was about to set when the goblins finally arrived at the very entrance of the valley. That night they decided to stay at a cave nearby. Later on, finding the goblins in the cave sitting around the fire, the moon, which had just risen, warned the valley about their arrival. The news spread rapidly the trees, the bushes, the animals, the flowers, the grasses, they all cried with fear. The rainbow goblins have come. The excited goblins began to discuss their plans to snatch the rainbow. "We'll eat the colours while the rainbow is still fresh and juicy" they said. But some roots hanging loosely from the ceiling of the cave listened carefully while the goblins schemed below. Outside the cave the moonshine reflected on the water. Its magical light stole into the cave, slightly illuminating the goblins who had fallen asleep. Suddenly, all the goblins had a dream about the paradise of rainbow land. It was a wonderful dream in which they lay down surrounded by huge and delicious rainbows. The goblin

s were awakened when it began to thunder in the distance. "Great, a wild storm" they said. Knowing that the most wonderful rainbows spring from the biggest thunderstorms, they began to dance. Suddenly the rainbow vanished while the goblins held their lassos in the air and then, controlled by the flowers who had listened to their message from their roots, the goblins were caught by their own lassos. The flowers cleverly sucked in the colors of the rainbow and began to drown the goblins in the colors they had come to steal. Saved by the flowers, the rainbow was reborn. More glourious and more splendid than ever before. As an act of grace, the rainbow transformed the flowers into beautiful butterflies, brilliant dragonflies, and magnificently plumed birds. Since that incident, the rainbow became very careful and decided never again to touch the ground. So now, although he may wish to, no one will ever again be able to reach either of the ends of the rainbow.

So max, you should either take care of this problem or close the website. Use your legal team to file a lawsuit against johnnylurg or something. Cause as it is now, no one is gonna post anything. I really hope you're working on a way to fix this.
