Not the chemicals, it's because bananas reproduce asexually when grown for commercial purposes, and thus lack genetic variation needed for a good immune system. There's thousands of varieties of bananas, but most taste nasty and have a bunch of big seeds inside. Plus, they look weird. Only a handful of varieties are the size, texture, and taste that we like. Only one breed is sold at a time, to ensure consistency. The first one to be sold is already extinct. It was bigger!
