He was spared and was instead converted into a cyborg coffee grinder, quesadilla press with built in .gif compatibility. Yes, Zaalnog was a gracious Lord, and a stern Lord. He was good to the servers, always optimized for space, used mp3's when possible, and basically made fun of people instead of filling in the citations, which we all know was pure gold.
