Do you speak any language that non-gibbering idiots can understand? Your post is an orgy of stultifying cacophonous verbal depravity; an exercise in literary impotence, and an offense to all of good taste and decency.
If there's an idea in your head, it's in solitary confinement. Why is it that the people with the smallest minds always have the biggest mouths? Well, you're certainly thoughtless; I just wish that you were keyboard-less, too. As Ellen Glasgow once remarked: "He knows so little and knows it so fluently."
I'm busy trying to imagine you with a personality. Maybe you'd be less boring once I got to know you, but I don't want to take that chance. You are the kind of person who, when one first meets you, one doesn't like you. But when one gets to know you better, one hates you. Maybe you wouldn't be such a Jerk-In-The-Box if you weren't an 'idiot savant' without the 'savant' part; if the chief excitement in your meaningless life wasn't spotting people who are fatter than you are, or if you didn't have a face that could be used as an alternative to a stomach pump. Who am I kidding? You would.
Anyway, I'm not really good with fools, but a friend who is good with fools wrote something down for me. Oh, yeah, "Shut your cake-hole, stupid!"

:) great job Max, most likely some prankster doing this. Surely if they wanted to do something about this, they would contact you more formally, instead of a letter from TomMabe3@aol.com.
Nah, dont delete it, you arent doing anything wrong. If you wanna delete it just for the sake of deleting it, go ahead, cus I sure am tired of this lame site.

One thing I had discussed a long time ago and have yet to do is a content box for sites with less than 10 or so votes, which would highlight a ton of crap, but also might pull out some nice little treasures. I know it would be more likely to pull up crap than good sites, so I think it should wait for the moderation system to be finished. The obvious dependence on the front page/up and coming is something I've been battling with for years. I think the search helped slightly, /browse/ is almost unused.

Well separating views based on outside users/registered users and referrer tracking is something I've wanted to do for a while. The major issue with all of this is database power. I specced out a database server I think would be able to handle all of that load, and it came out to around $20,000, so I don't see it happening soon.

Max, I think it is a little late for that kind of sentiment. After the layout change there was a long stretch of time where there seemed to be no activity from you or the mods in maintaining the site. IMO, less people would have gotten disinterested and left ytmnd if more was done about some of the problems such as mutliple alt/downvoters ruining the site. I'm not blaming anyone, but I think that has something to do with the level of activity and the current quality of sites.

Do you honestly think a nonprofit charity organization would support a site with kittens being crushed by high heels and gay men have open sex? It sounds nice, but remember that this is YTMND and the freedom of speech here isn't quite something charities like to be associated with...

Good post! Do whatever you can to make money. Increased loading times might even deter some of the more garbageish sites. YTMND is a great concept. Maybe do something like a donation program? I didn't realize that sponsoring sites went to you as a donation. I would rather just donate some dollars to you and the site instead of sponsoring some random YTMND.
Take care!

Pedigree? Wtf. Anyone who is pink did it through their own hard work. All you have to do is make good sites and you'll be pink too. Not too complicated is it? And as far as users already getting a lot of exposure, I would disagree with this. Only a handful of the ytmnd elite can sh*t something out and get it upvoted into U&C, no matter what. It seems that the turnover rate is pretty high on ytmnd, so that if you're not constantly making sites, it's hard to become a recognizable name, except among regs

I think a good idea would be an option to set a field in a site to list another site as an "inspiration." As most sites and based around something else, being able to track upwards through them for the chain of humor without depending on the image/audio source being filled in linking the other site would be nice. The lists seem like another way of allowing each person to do this manually for their own use. The lists look good too.

also an explanation as to the happenings with the featured user section would be appreciated. I don't know, it looks like you're doing some sort of one day a week no featured user sites display, at least let us know so we reconsider before debuting something important/hard-worked.

Freaking awesome. Loved the whole bit of it. It seems like the switch to Flash would really do wonders for the site. I love the ad idea as well. I'm not sure what the cost of hosting YTMND is currently though :/ could you give us some idea Max? I'm just curious.
Also, gl with flash! Hope to see something new in the future :P

Max,
you may not be proud of YTMND, and you may feel unappreciated, but sir, you are AWESOME and you need to know it. Even if YTMND isn't doing what you want it to do, it's still doing what IT wants to do, which is a sign of something major: it's alive. it has a soul. it has an emergent identity and that is something precious and amazing even if it's not the precious amazing thing you were hoping for.
And seriously if I ever saw you on the street, I would shake your hand and definitely buy you lunch.

honestly. this has been hilarious reading all the comments. how stupid can people be? they read something and automatically believe it's true. i could come on here and say Will Smith died in a horrible plane crash, and at least 75% of the people would believe it's true just from that. how f*cking retarded can you possibly be!?! do you not check sources at all? try finding a news article about someone jumping in front of a train recently, nothing. therefore not true, something like this would make news...

That's how it started.... that's how Alpha Beta Gaga became my all-time favorite song. I think the puppy also had something to do with it.

but then the sites won't get the 350 votes usually needed to get off Up and Coming. Top Rated would probably then turn into what Top Viewed has become, and then pretty much decrease the overall activity on the site. Remember when the vote limit for UaC was 500? Sites seemed to stay on the section then as long as they do now. I guess we lost some users since then or something. If we got some more users to join the site then it would probably fix it and get sites off UaC sooner. ...

Is it just me, or are site ratings inflating to ridiculous proportions? The lowest rated site on up and coming is 4.35. That's crazy. Also, there is so little traffic that some sites are staying on up and coming for almost a week. We should do something about that. I want to know what my sites are really worth. Also it would be nice to see not so many people getting shafted because they don't have the connections to jump to up and coming to get attention from the rest of ytmnd. It's a harsh climate.

It may be Retarded user error on my part, but for some reason all (nsfw) ytmnd's take me to the mannotfounddog.ytmnd.com . If someone could check into it and post back or pm me would be great. max makes a good point, but I think the author of 'Tom Hanks Rocket' deserves to be treated with respect.

Nobody would say that sort of thing to Tom Hanks' father, if he had fathered a rocket. Nobody.

In all seriousness, blommer, it's day 2 of a massive overhaul of a website done almost entirely by max and launched on April Fool's day. For one, your opinion is one of thousands. Consider that for a second. You know how you feel when people say something critical about your sites that you put hours into? Magnify that by thousands, put on top of it the privilege you should be thankful for of a free service granted to you for years at no cost and at great effort and financial risk/loss, and cap it all off with your lack of graciousness, let alone indifference, and you're a fairly despicable human being. If not worse, you deserve... well, probably what your life has given you. Let's be honest. You didn't have anything better to do with those hours.

1.) What exactly do you think moderation will do? All moderators could do in the past is mark sites NSFW. What exactly is so rampantly ruining the site that requires intervention?

2.) This has been discussed at length both in news posts and on the wiki. I don't want to get into the game of using the behavior of a user, their voting habits, or anything else to change the value of votes. A vote is a vote, and that isn't going to change.

3 + 4) This is something we've discussed in the past as well, but it ultimately punishes new members of the site much more than it would stop alt-voting. Using a time-based gating system would just get people to plan out alts and using an activity-based gating system would end up spamming the site. The easiest way to remove incentive for making alts is by deleting the main accounts of people who make alts to vote, which we've been doing.

Now if by "moonman" you were referring to "Moon Man", the "fad" many users actually care about, then deleting Moon man sites is also certainly not a good thing to do. For starters, how are Moon man sites a problem? Please explain this to me? I have asked many raging critics of Moon man sites to explain their hatred, and none of them seem to do it adequately. All Moon man sites are marked (nsfw), so the vulgarity should not be an issue. Is it perhaps the "racism"? Let me explain something. Since the beginning of this website, the majority of YTMNDs fall into one of several categories.

1.Cats
2.Racism
3.Gay jokes
4.Stupid inside jokes that only the creator and a select group of his peers understand.

Those types of sites have some quality ones, and some shitty ones, but they all make up the majority of the types of YTMNDs. The fact is the majority of YTMND's users are underage, juvenile, immature, people who use the site on and off for a few months before disappearing forever. If you do not believe me than just click that "users" button near the top of the site and count how many of those thousands of users are still active. Not a big percentage is it?

I do not know why many of this site's users, including yourself, think of the Moon Crew as their enemies. We do not 1 every non-Moon man site and we do not engage in any sort of hostile actives toward this website. I do not know why any user could possibly think that we would benefit from this website dying. Where would we post Moon man sites if YTMND was gone? The Moon Crew also does not want to take the administrative control of this website from you and place into our command. As much as I disagree with some of your policies, you still pay the server bills, fix the site bugs (most of which are your fault by the way, but still), and deal with other trivial website issues that the Moon Crew has no desire to take on.

Dude, seriously, I've dealt with the EPA in my real life occupation and that's as personal as I'm going to get here - they simply don't do their jobs. At all. Same goes across the whole sector - that's why we privatize everything.

I actually agree with your overall point that hand-waving arguments about big government are stupid, because yes, someone needs to build infrastructure and that role needs to be done by the government. The problem in the U.S. is that the government sector consists of two types of people:
-Slow, unambitious people that couldn't compete in the private sector (about 90%).
-Overly ambitious people with political goals who have no concern for the job they are doing, only using it as a two-year stepping stone to get their foot in the door (about 10%).

The former is mostly bureaucratic asshats that just do the bare minimum to keep their 35-hours-a-week job and that's all they want in life. The latter is mostly lawyers. Either way, you have massive incompetence filling the lower-to-middle eschelons of the biggest consumer in the U.S. In many countries, getting a government job is seen as highly desirable - the top graduates from the top universities tend to go to government jobs because of prestige and competitive pay. Here, govt. work is seen as something "for the slow people".

Okay, you brought up the EPA. Let's say you graduated from a top engineering school like Stanford or MIT with a degree in environmental engineering - state DEP agencies (which do most of the actual environmental protection work) pay about $20k on average. The big firms pay about $85k. You worked hard to get where you are - which job would you take?

Yeah yeah government mandates are based upon public good - but their INTENT is not the question on either side. The problem is they simply don't perform. Okay seriousness over, national policy is not decided on YTMND so it's pointless to delve into this here.
