Spam as denial of service
Spamming has also been used as a denial of service ("DoS") tactic, particularly on Usenet. By overwhelming the readers of a newsgroup with an inordinate number of nonsense messages, legitimate messages and computing resources can be lost in the deluge. Since these messages are usually forged (that is, sent falsely under regular posters' names) this tactic has come to be known as sporgery (from spam + forgery). This tactic has for instance been used by members of the Church of Scientology against the alt.religion.scientology newsgroup (see Scientology versus the Internet) and by spammers against news.admin.net-abuse.email, a forum for mail administrators to discuss spam problems. Applied to e-mail, this is termed mailbombing. The Usenet Meow Wars (around 1996) were DoS attacks on various newsgroups aimed at specific posters that disrupted the newsgroups where they were active. The DoS attacks launched by Hipcrime, which continue today, are more crafted as DoS attacks on entire news
A little story about Paris Hilton...a cousin of mine is the concierge at a famous (but will remain nameless) resort in Las Vegas (they use the term "guest services" there so as not to be deemed French-y). It is his job to make the high rollers feel at home, which involves everything from taking them golfing to getting them hookers and sh*t like that. He daily deals with famous people and has dirt on many but, usually, what happens in Vegas...
...except when it comes to Paris. So one day he's out golfing with some high rollin flotsam and he gets a call from the front desk. Paris is there with her entourage, and luggage, and her dog. She wants a room but the hotel has a strict "no pets" rule. She's pissed and she won't take no for an answer. Paris "guy" takes the phone from the front desk person and starts yelling at my cousin to let her bring her dog into the hotel.
My cousin, who does not take people yelling at him lightly, says to the "guy" "Tell your moronic slut of a boss that her parents own a hotel two blocks over. She can't miss it, it has her name on it." And hangs up on the "guy". She freaks out and throws a fit and her whole entourage gets escorted out of the hotel. My cousin then calls the front desk person back and congratulates him for standing his ground because...
...1. she has in the past destroyed entire suites, with her Punk™ rock friends and 2. She is an absolute moron or she would have known, having been raised in the hotel business, that if she'd simply said that her dog was a "helper dog", by law, the hotel could not have asked how it helped her, nor could they have refused her stay. Just thought you'd appreciate that story.
