why wouldn't they? the sudden callamitous end seems allmost merciful by comparison to the alternatives. there are two things that control our future on this planet, the population, and the consumption of that population. if we aren't smart enough to control those two ourselves peacefully, than we're just flies trapped in a plastic garbage bag. when humanity finally does bite it it will happen slowly, and painfully, and the poor will feel it first. 1/3 of the worlds children currently suffer from hunger.

the plannet will outlive us, although some of these species wont. its only a matter of time ;) of course its not so tragic if you've allready resigned yourself to mortality. plus nature has the uncanny ability to resovle concept of good and evil, and has been doing so for eons, while humans still make each other misserable with it. I think the movie "A thin red line", has allot to say about this. especially the quote about the dead bird.

Something tells me that you are about to blame this all on 'capitalism'.

not at all, I'm actually somthing of a libritarian, and besides our effect on the planet has been growing for millenia. I'm just saying that there are things that we can control, and things that we cant.
