I almost understand where you are coming from, because the first time I played the game, it was at a toys r us, and I started roaming around Hyrule field with clear idea of my objective. I got stuck in a fenced in area and fought skeletons the entire time because I didn't know how to contextually use the joystick to jump over the fence. I had no f*cking clue what the point of the game was, and I wrote it off until a friend showed it to me in the right context. I was used to games being a linear experience.
I thought: "well this is boring. What is the point of doing all this stuff?" I didn't know there was a story, puzzles, tons of items, and exploration. The exciting thing about the Ocarina was not playing the songs, but discovering what you used them for. The exciting thing about roaming the Hyrule field was not slaying skeletons, but discovering a new destinations. The sword fighting was just something to keep you busy. What made the game so great, was that YOU were controlling the adventure.
