I recall the issue actually wasn't resolution at all, but that the reduction interpolation he chose would have been more effective if he had used a different resizing method other than bilinear, for example nearest neighbour (photoshop), or even bicubic would be better to have the clean edges that give that more accurately portray the original feel of the game. Bleeding edges ruin it.
