ThinkingMan Reminisces (f11)
Some of my favorite sites and fads, although this is not a complete list. We can all bitch about how ytmnd sucks now or how it was never good, but take a moment to think of how your life would be different if ytmnd had never existed... I'd like to thank all of ytmnd. I thank you all.

The other day, I made a comment in passing to a friend that YTMND seems so self-referential now that it was possible that someone coming to the front page for the first time might not get any of the jokes. This is not to say YTMND sucks, mind you. Thanks for this look back at excellent fads.

That is a very fair critique of ytmnd, and if anyone as at fault it is I. I don't think I have but maybe 5 slightly original sites...

I admit that most of what I post are fad-related or experiments with GIMP. I remember signing on back in 2005 for ten hours at a time just to watch fads mutate.

I've seen a lot of folks over the years criticize fadcomps. I've often thought this was because they were easy (in the same sense that pure nostalgia is easy), but you may be right that it's the self-referentialness of them. Anyway, fadcomps might just be underrated, as they catalog the cultural capital of the community.

I've always thought that fads were basically what this site was built on

Cool, you made another one!

I like how you made The Thinker come across as a sad figure, and the music is really good. I also like how the background might imply that we are currently in a drought and the sun is setting on us.

Why f11? Is everyone still using 1024 x 768 monitors? What is this, 2001?

f11 is reminiscent of early ytmnd history, not that anyone actually needs to do it anymore.

But you've only been a member since late 2009. How could possibly know what we've been through? Our sweat, our frustration, OURS AND OURS ALONE.

i like to think of myself more as a historian than a chronicler. archeologists don't need to have lived in, say, ancient persia to put artifacts on display at a museum.

By the way, if the hue shift is a reference to all the artfaggy sites, bravo. Very good.
