Tomorrow Untrodden

Greetings.

I've taken the next few weeks off from work to have another YTMND development drive. This will include much-needed maintenance, bug fixes and a few new features. In addition to this, I've been working with Big Spaceship over the last month working on a new design, which I'll be implementing as well. If I have the remaining time, I'll be fixing up the admin panels and possibly adding some new mods.

So this is your chance to complain about anything (aside from the design) that's been bugging you recently or stuff you've been dying for.

I'll keep you guys updated over the next few weeks in between eating handfuls of adderall. Please provide useful feedback and bug reports. While I'm working on the new codebase, I'm going to be moderating with an iron fist. There will be zero tolerance for spamming/trolling/etc, so unless you want all your accounts deleted and to be IP banned at our routers, please try and behave for once.

Please do not bother me about being a moderator, when the time comes I'll make a news post about it.

related to this, anything that was uploaded as a .JPG now calls it ".jpeg" in the asset description page, and then clicking the link leads nowhere, but if you modify that url to say ".jpg" instead of ".jpeg" it works fine.

i usually stick to GIFs or PNGs, but still this error persists.

May I suggest we make a new contest à la Jon Stewart's rally? Something like "Contest to restore Dogginess" or similar. A contest in which we, the 99.99% of the community, are fed up of the constant stream of shit delivered by the other 0.01%. I think a fun contest like that would help reconnect our community and make it a little stronger.

New limit on making sites!!!

When I say this, I mean to make a limit so people can stop site spamming.
http://weneedchange.ytmnd.com/

Examples of what you can do:
A user can only make an X amount of sites in a day

A user can only make a site every 10 minutes.

A user can't make a site that they already used the name for. (Let's say a use made a site called "Sauce", well that user can't name another site called "Sauce" again.) And a user can't make 2 sites with the same audio, pictures, and content.

Actually I suggested this before here http://thiscoulddoit.ytmnd.com/. Max actually implemented it and people bitched for a bit but it worked out great. Then for some strange reason he decided to remove the limit. I asked him why and his response was that he would just delete the user accounts of the offending users. Anyway long story short bring back the 1 site per hour limit, get some mods, have said mods remove bad apples and we might just have ourselves a website again. However personally I've given up hope of this place ever being anything like it used to be back in 2006.

Because a personal site no one will see is so much more damaging to the YTMND community than the voting abuse that has given a site like this:

[site advicemax8:site]

a higher rating than literally 90% of Syncan's sites.

There's a reason sites today only get 1/10th the amount of views they did a couple of years ago and this is it. And it's the only thing that really needs to be fixed.

here's something to think about:

some people in "the forum where the current state of the site is being discussed" are trying to figure out ways to solve the "personal sites" problem and the group voting problem. ok, these are problems i guess, but they are inevitable problems. or, inevitable symptoms of an online community. if you're trying to find concrete solutions to these problems, aren't you trying to limit

1) the user's right to post what they want

and

2) the users right to vote how they please

aren't number 1 and number 2 the most basic ideas that allow ytmnd to be ytmnd? wouldn't it be kind of fascist to try and regulate them?

Ever go to Funny or Die? Ever go there and click on a site on their home page, one that the community there is recommending you view, only to be shown an annoying and pointless flashing video with loud loud loud screeching audio? If I did and that's what they were featuring on their home page, I would never go back and probably would avoid ever clicking on a link from there again.

There's a person who has been doing that to YTMND for 3 or 4 years now. Day after day, year after year. And there are people who play their part by helping to feature such sites on YTMND's homepage. Safe to assume that such behavior has cost YTMND a lot of users and thus has cost your sites a lot of views.

One might think people so desperate to get their sites onto YTMND's homepage would resent someone who has done little as a member of this community but ensure that fewer and fewer people will see their site if it does get featured.
But I don't. Because I know full well how stupid people can allow themselves to become when presented with the reality that they might actually be wrong about something - especially on the internet.

you have good points there. yes, i've been to funny or die. it's great, but the one thing that i always liked about ytmnd is that its more user oriented. all the garbage has always been part of the fun for me, but yeah, it certainly keeps away lots of users.

i guess i would like to see this place grow up and become more like FoD or other places like that. that's what will save it.

i guess i'm agreeing with you. not that i was ever totally against you on the subject. 100% of my responses to you here were for the sole purpose of being a wiseass and making you respond. especially my above comment about fascism.

so yes, i would like a more rigid front page format, but i also wouldn't want to totally loose the internet-garbage aspect all together.

The oldest issue with ytmnd is that Max never took his baby really seriously. He's been running this site himself the entire span of its existence and could never keep up with the demands of the userbase, so they left. Instead of doing what any sensible person would do and turn ytmnd into a business and hiring people to keep up with demands and evolve the site and design, he insisted on keeping it completely static and self-contained within the community, only pushing to make vague promises of small incremental improvements based on a trickle of echo chamber demands (and even then he ignored some of that and made whatever you want to call YTMND 2.0). Max has never aggressively pushing for relevance, despite the clear opportunity to do so starting in mid 2006, ytmnd's peak, and that is why ytmnd has become the garbage heap of the internet instead of a viable alternative to other user-based media sites. Other sites grew up, and ytmnd festered and rot.

I haven't "hired people to keep up with demand" because the majority of advertisers find you guys worthless, this site never has (and most likely never will) make me rich, or even enough to hire anyone with a decent skill-set to help out on the workload.

there should be a section on the new front page where users can post pictures of themselves. like, it could be called "Pick List" and we could like, post pics from facebook or just mirror pics or like pics of whatever. i was edward cullen for halloween, and i've been dieing to get my costume pics onto ytmnd. i looked really good. i had sex that night. with a big fat pirate in the bathroom at a party. that is not a lie.

plus, i really want to see all kinds of real life user related stuff, like what cereal max ate for breakfast or what toilet paper brand feels the best on fourest's butt. like, if i could see a fourest-uploaded pic taken from the view of him sitting on the toilet, and you can see the opened Charmin Ultra Soft pack sitting next to the tub and like fourest's leg is blurry in the bottom corner of he pic, haha! that would be awesome.

if you could upload .txt files or microsoft word files, that would be cool. i wanna read poetry, short stories, emails, journal entries, whatever. if a user made it, i wanna see it.

everything i said is a lie. not the fat pirate part, unfortunately. i was fingering her butt and eating her out. i'm still waiting for my lips to break out and the roof of my mouth to turn to liquid.

I see you rolled back the profile numbers, but new sites are still submitting at the point where superdreamkilla left off with the spamming, meaning 1000000/profile is probably still lost forever. Unless you make another fix.

The site creation time limit is now one site per hour, but with that fix, it screwed something else up. Now, if we make a site and realize it needs edits to fix sync, etc, we have to wait a whole hour to make edits.

blue stars should be back again now. The lookups are a fairly large toll on the DB so they are on dedicated slave db (which also does predictions). If the slave gets desynched, no blue stars.

I need to be able to see my votes (the purple? stars that show up after i vote) they show up immediately but upon any refresh they are gone. As a high volume voter it is very discouraging and wasteful to vote on a site and have "what" pop up meaning i already viewed/voted. It's been this way since at least may, it was a problem before then, but was fixed, but then came back.
Also it would be nice to have random ytmnd back and working; random.ytmnd.com goes to a site once "unviewable."
Also i can vote on most sites while they load, so i don't have to view them. I usually do view them, but if my internet is going slow, then i don't.
FIX:YTMND needs to rise back to its glory days of 05/06, but i guess that falls to the users making good content.

PLEASE fix the fact that when I vote I can't see how many stars I gave a ytmnd at the same time as I see what the average rating is anymore. It used to be so convenient to tell if I'd seen an old ytmnd or not. Some of us have been here for years and don't want to look at random dick shots or hear loud screeching sounds we downvoted years ago.

new problem Search function seems to be fucked. Results aren't any good. A search for John Whitecloud doesn't reveal any John Whitecloud sites. They also used to be sorted by rank, now they are not.

I think I read most of the comments in this journal post twice. I feel very concerned about the situation that is creating here. I sense so much hate, whether it is staged or not. I don't want to talk about me, but I have to tell you this: I'm quite a sensitive person and I visit this site maybe 20 times a day. I like to see what people share, I like the funny stuff, but when I look harder I read the comments, I see downvotes driven by pure hate, jealousy or even for no reason at all (dare I say "just for fun".) And since the site is up again the negativity is palpable more than ever. I'm even experiencing it firsthand, thanks to a user who doesn't act like his/her blood is flowing to his/her brain. As Max said in a post in 2007 (I'm paraphrasing,) freedom of speech is ok, but when the shit hits the fan you have to spend a lot of time cleaning the fan. And a soapy sponge is not enough.
I like to imagine this site as a place where you have fun, reflect and discuss about what people feel important to share. Do we really have to fight against each other, for things which don't even concern our role in this community? Do we have to scream and offend, saying the obvious most of the time? Do we have to judge, condemn and bash just because we think we have a right to say whatever we want?
I live in a place where school books used to be regulated by the "government" and still there's a lot to complain about openness. Stephen Colbert often jokingly says "Freedom isn't free." Maybe he's right, if you think about it. We have been given a chance to express ourselves, by a sole person. Let's not spoil this opportunity, we cannot take anything for granted. For the sake of this community, behave yourself. All of us. Me too.

I like you. This is like a comment that I would have made 2-3 years ago.

Oh my god, why have I been on ytmnd for over 3 years. Jesus Christ.

Anyway, here's the thing: trying to instigate positivity and productivity from the apathetic/pathetic masses of ytmnd is meaningless. Most of the users active in the community are trolls or mental cases, or something in between. Of those listening who are not part of the problem, 90% of them have observed the community climate and have independently reasoned something to the affect of what you have said, so they don't need to hear it, and don't get involved ever. They are the type of people that intuitively avoid any and all pissing contests, and are very self-assured, of both their stature and penis size, but because they are non-interventionists nothing gets improved. The other 10% tread lightly and are fucking awesome. Or at least, this is what I tell myself.

Max can you make a ytmnd/spy link in the top tab. I'm 800 lbs and I feel like I get overworked having to type in the url manually to stalk other users.

all I have to do is type "y" in my search browser and it's the first thing that comes up. Also, you can just make a tab for it in your own browser. I like how the Spy is kind of an Easter Egg. not everybody knows about it. let's keep it that way so we don't get all the idiots in there going "ASL???" "ANY HAWY GIRLS PRESS#348923"

here's a cut and paste from a PM i sent in response to a user asking if they should continue various ytmnd projects they had started:

also, ive been working on 4 sites, high quality edits, but ive been doing so much other stuff. then, when i click back here and see the latest inside joke site by jimmm/8bit/gnu/theebatman or whoever, 5 pde sites abot nothing that play random overplayed music, 1 or 2 lax83 earrape sites, 15 gifs from other websites, the same typical pandering (PANDERING) umfuld sites that draw from the same 4 assets sources, displaying jokes other people made, that look like legolewdite got sligtly better image editing software and - WOAH - there's an identifiable message being portrayed (usually of the lamest sort) as opposed to a completely inane mashup of image, speech and instrumentals, sites by other users that show after effects tutorials verbatim, fourest's new formula, bad funny-internet-faggot joke, general fod's craptastic unfuny box image inside boc image mattdh12 wannabe plus father mckenzie wannabe slash alternative appeal gone wrong site, maybe a bad bored jedi site about a dead fad, ...then, wow, then.... jeeez, that really makes me want to keep doing this, makes me want to finish my nice edits, especially when i have actual film projects to do that are not gifs, that do not run on a max of 10 frames per second, that a wider community may see and enjoy, that.....is not associated with these seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriously, seriou
