Devil Derrick, as someone who has creeped ytmnd for about 2 years before creating an account, i feel i must bring your attention to a certain [i]factor[/i] this site provides that you seem to be neglecting. <br /><br />Niche and inside jokes are what make this website extremely appealing. <br /><br /> 2 years ago a friend sent me a link to the dramatic reading of the breakup letter. I thought it was hilarious. Then i found myself navigating to the homepage of ytmnd and looking around. [u][i]I had no idea what was going on[/i][/u]. I tried to search "dramatic" to find the site i had seen, and then i stumbled upon a fad of using dramatic ass music like "ghost love score" with looped gifs or ridiculous pictures in the foreground. I started to see what this place was about, sort of. The site with batman carrying the classic villain bomb, running through a crowded area, is also hilarious. <br /><br />And so, i found myself navigating the website, clicking on titles i might identify with, or understand in the slightest bit. Some sites are annoying as fuck, some shit i just dont understand at all, and some other stuff is just plain stupid. However, I constantly found myself intrigued by sites that were clearly an inside joke of some sort.<br /><br />keep in mind that every single fad site is, indeed, an inside joke that most "outsiders" wouldn't understand. (and i wont even mention the enjoyment of realizing that fads were even a thing). Unless a site can stand up on its own, despite whatever fad it is a part of, an outsider would have no idea what it was and would likely exit the window thinking "dafuq was tht?"<br /><br />My point is, this site [i]is[/i] just one big inside joke. There are so many different things going on, all at once. Not only that, but there are different layers of upon layers of niche to dive into. He/she also didn't create any of the original footage or even simple assets. After Effects is the great compiler, like photoshop on acid. It's very easy to just throw shit together and pull out the background. Not that this isn't a great gif. I love it. But it's not like a crazy spectacle to point at and be like D00D!!!1!9 LOOK AT THAYT!!!!!! OMG OMFG!!!! WUT???? it's cool and pretty but is not like a new discovery in the art world. The message not being clear is understood, as it is abstract, and was mostly for myslef and a few friends IRL.<br /><br />I only retorted to the random stuff comment to try and explain how it wasn't random to me, though it may appear so to you.<br /><br />By the background, I assume you mean the 4-up collage of Forrest dancing to Elvis's guitar playing..<br /><br />In one of the squares, his face is prominent, but his eyes and mouth have been obscured by brush strokes to the point where he looks inhuman and appears to be incapable of speech or sight (lacking communication abilities and conventional human wisdom).<br /><br />This shows how people in his community view and treat him (as an inhuman monster, like Frankenstein's monster) and how many normal people today view handicaps - especially the mentally challenged).<br /><br />This speak-no-evil and see-no-evil distortion/mutilation also portrays Forrest's inability to express his confusion and pain from his ostracizing. Though he lacks communication skills, he does think and feel, as demonstrated by his interpretive dance moves.<br /><br />The other 3 squares are connected physically (the brush stokes overlap, blend and connect certain squares at times) and conceptually, as they demonstrate his magic-leg-dancing attempt at moshing to the percussion of the "normal" world's expectations of him. Although his mechanical braces look heavy and clunky in normal view, here in his muddy and modeled vision we see how, to him, they float and flow like oil on water. All the sharp edges and stigmas melt away into an effortless footloose-ness as he wriggles and writhes his way through a first foray into jubilation.<br /><br />All 4 background squares represent his difficulty and pain, and how he tries to cope on his own.<br /><br />The foreground represents his rapture and joy in finding rare and true friends who love him for who he is.
