If, today, 90% of American adults believe in God, and I think it's safe to assume that a strong majority (at least 66%) of all people that have ever lived believed in a higher power, couldn't one reason that the majority of murders are caused by those with faith? But why should that matter? Because one Christian kills one person, and another Christian kills one million people, why should such a statistic condemn Christianity? Why should it codemn any faith, or lack thereof?

If you were to look at "religious people" vs "non-religious people" throughout history, I'm sure that the results would be different. Also, don't equate nations with a stance against religion and their leaders with all atheists. Again, that's hardly a fair comparison.

As far as atheism having a non-religion-based morality... There are common morals that any society must share in order to exist. Thou shalt not kill: If you're going to kill me, I can't live near you. Thou shalt not steal: If you're going to take my food, I can't live near you. Thou shalt not bear false witness: If I can't trust that you're generally telling me the truth, I can't believe anything you're saying. If I can't believe you, we can't communicate, and a society cannot exist without communication.
Failure of intellect. The perpetrators were Communists, not Atheists. The fact that they were (supposedy) Atheists is incidental to the fact that they were Communists, and killed to spread a Communist agenda. Plus, if you speak to Communists, after a while you get the idea that a lot of them have a religion after all... and Marx is its prophet.
Being against organized religion does not make you an atheist. An atheist is one who does not believe in the existence of a god or higher power. There term you're looking for is a SECULARIST. Examples: Agnostics, the Bahai'i Faith, and a group of people who call themselves nondenominational CHRISTIANS.
And by the way, i'm not an atheist. I'm actually a proud Catholic (yes, the Vatican has killed a lot of people, no one denies it.), but my problem is this: pricks [i.e. you, missionaries, inquisitions] who try to force their religious beliefs on to someone else. Good idea! Because we all know # of religious people EXACTLY EQUALS the # of nonreligious people! Nothing unfair about that!
Obviously an organization like str would make such claims. The problem is, people are killed often in the direct or indirect name of a religion more often than someone is killed in the name of atheism. Instead of citing particular instances of genocide, I'm talking about murder, which is the number one cause of death at the hands of another human since the dawn of time, outweighing genocide. But if you wanna get down to deaths directly in the name of religion, the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition
are pretty good examples. Mao's Great Leap Forward, although caused by a secular government, was not in the name of atheism.

Whetstone, the reason people are so horrified by religious killings is because of the sheer hypocrisy of it. Atheists don't pretend that they are expelling demons or saving your soul when they kill you. They don't tell you that you should be grateful to them for torturing you. They don't kill you in the name of a god that condemns murder. I'm not supporting atheism, but I do understand why many people turn their backs on religion.

The last time I checked, the bible said something like "don't kill" unless it was a typo and really meant "don't kill white peoples". Actually, benjafar, most killings that are popularly attributed to religious motivations (like the Crusades, the Inquisition, etc) had predominantly secular motivations, such as grabbing land. The religious justification was almost always an afterthought tacked on to try to legitimize whatever it was that would have been done anyway. If you're going to lay the Crusades at the feet of Christianity, you might as well lay Tienamen Square at the feet of Atheism.
Also, re: anifanatic's question as to how many lives have been saved by "atheist" scientific advances, I challenge you to name a single scientific discovery that atheists can claim sole credit for. Up until relatively recently, the majority of scientific advances were made by religious men, many of whom pursued science and a rational model of the universe as a means of better understanding God, while the atheists of the period insisted that there was no rhyme or reason to the universe.
Indeed, many a theological scholar has argued, from a purely Christian standpoint, that NOTHING GOOD that has been "contributed" by ANY human is a result of "their own" hard work, as they would like to believe. Even 10+ years of training at a medical school and a "degree" say nothing good whatsoever for the idiot who takes the credit. the 10 years "HE" spent resulted in a piece of paper that should not be seen as recognition, but instead as official accreditation that the "doctor" has RECIEVED a GIFT...
I would like to thank samwise for showing how it can take forever to refute these sorts of arguments. I would have to prove that the Crusades were not over land, I would do this by showing that the region had no resources that couldn't be found in Europe. I would then have to show the inquisitions happened on land that already belonged to the Catholics. As for the science argument, it is pointless to begin with. Lacking a religion and the concept of God doesn't exist are not equal.
It's like nonorganized Atheists and organized Atheists; organized Atheists would be talking about returning to Earth after death, death and life is all part of living, there isn't a greater power (talking about self-reliance), etc. Many poets of the Romantism period are Atheists or Deists. Not sure where you got your numbers but Christians have the highest kill count by far - every country had its own unique culture and religion before christianity invaded it. Just the holocaust alone (remember folks Hitler was a devout roman catholic who would meet with pope pius XII on a bi-weekly basis) is at least 6 million people - which overshadows your pseudoscientific calculations. Since the christinzation of the Roman empire to now hundreds of millions have died from christianity.

I'm not even a Christian really but Atheism is the most retarded idea ever. To look at how compicated everything is and think it came about by chance is f*cking retarded. ok a few things, first of all, this is really well made, the layout is very tight so well done. but then when we actually look at the content, its rubbish for 2 main reasons
1)its wrong-your figures are innacurate
2)killing kicks ass
