| Actually by spreading the materials needed to pirate HD DVDs you are actually spreading them. Let's say I can download HD DVDs then i'll probably buy an HD DVD burner because it is now a good investment. Secuity flaws can easily be fixed, but market share is not so easy to turn around so if they can establish themselves then there is little Sony can do. |

Even if Sony's HD were a monopoly (i.e. absolutely no one wants DVDs), they still can't charge above what consumers are willing to pay, or else they'll earn negative profit (yes, monopolies can earn negative profits.) Sony can't control the market as long as consumers consider DVDs to be close substitutes. If HD really is the future, there has to be a continuing increase of demand for the technology (i.e. if everyone starts buying HDTVs and plasma screens.) | ||||||

| I don't even get why people dig HD-DVD so much. It's an overblown, overexpensive format. Standard DVD gives perfectly good clarity. Does anyone really need the kind of detail offered by HD and Blu-Ray to the point of counting the individual pockmarks on Sid Haig's face in "The Devil's Rejects"? The only good thing about these formats is that they've taken the attention away from SDVD so that the prices are going down to a more affordable level. Pirate away, Captain Jack. |

| This is totally unrealated to this ytmnd but the reason why people use HD DVD/Blu-ray players is fairly simple. Most LCD HDTV's (and some Plasma) cannot process lower resolution feeds as well as when compared to a standard television. This is especially true if the content is not digital. A DVD has a resolution of 420i/420p (standard tv). An HD DVD or Blu Ray Disk supports a much higher resolution of 1080i/1080p. It's a much clearer and vibrant picture to compinsate for the poor transfer of standard DVDs. | ||||||
| HD DVD and Blu Ray can only become the 'future' if there is an excess demand for them such that firms have an incentive to invest in this technology. HD doesn't have much market power in the digital media market because DVD format is such a close substitute that the elasticity for Sony's products can hardly make them any more than normal economic profit. The HD prices can't rise above what we are willing to pay, or else firms will earn NEGATIVE profit and stick with DVDs. | ||||||
