Amazing Grace

Salutations Buds,

In 2001, I registered the domain www.yourethemannowdog.com after seeing Sean Connery perform his famous line "You're the man now dog!" in a digital trailer for Finding Forrester. I didn't know what to do with it, and for the first few months it hosted nothing but some ascii text in the form of a landing page. Shortly after that I arrived at the format it has remained in to this day.

Ten years ago today, on April 1st, 2004, I registered the domain ytmnd.com. It was intended to be a quick little website that would host small sites that were in the same format as www.yourethemannowdog.com. These sites had been popping up rapidly at that time and just as rapidly disappearing due to lack of hosting. Now we're nearing almost one million YTMNDs made, and almost a third of my life working on and "maintaining" a site that was started as a joke.

I didn't expect this site to last as long as it has, but even as our community is dwindling in size (and quality) I find myself with a desire to work on YTMND more often. I think it's time to begin another development cycle on YTMND; ample time has passed since I've done any real development. I'd like to dispose of Flash altogether now that browser audio support is more widespread, but converting the entire site over is not an insignificant amount of work.

The last few weeks have had me doing system administration (the wiki server that we were fundraising for suddenly began having issues and is being RMA'd now) and T-shirt fulfillment. There is a lot more server setup/virtualization to do in the coming weeks, but it should hopefully reduce our bills and make things run more smoothly in the future.

I wanted to write more of a news post on this, the first day of the 10th year of YTMND's birth, but frankly, I procrastinated and am now exhausted from juggling this and work (and the obituary).

I'll update in a day or two when I get the original /contrib/ directory back up and running.

My comeback to YTMND means that now we have life support.

I used to flood comments on this news page. But now I've rehabilitated with some clean time after alt abuse.

One day, max is gonna charge us money to keep our YTMND accounts.

It could be something as little as $10 a month, or maybe something as brutal as $1,000 a month.

Either way, salvaging free entertainment is a cause to ensure he doesn't start charging us money.

This site was once great.... On a related note, I'm looking for a page but I cant seem to find it. It involved Teal'c from Stargate SG-1 translating a Jaffa joke. The joke translated into "FAGGOT!" Please ytmnd, find it for me. You're my only hope!

I miss this place being active. This was my hangout before I was introduced to 4chan...and now I'm stuck there. I miss popular shit being called "fads" instead of "memes".

YTMND is getting to the point where sponsoring sites may be the best way to make up for lost ad revenue.

There might be a spike, but this is not going to last. I also get the feeling that site sponsorships are a "drop in the bucket" for costs, even today for hosting costs and general maintenance work.

Best thing we can hope for is for Max to breakdown the costs of ownership of the website in a fairly transparent manner so we can see just how realistic keeping it up actually is. I'd be willing to bet all of these sites take up terabytes of just storage space...

An updated news posting would be nice as well, if just to say "hi." Not all of us are fully "mentally ill," just nostalgic at seeing a piece of our lives (and online history) discussed again and to not totally fall into obscurity.

Heck, I can't even find YTMND listed under the Federated Media ad list anymore. Ads look blank (and yes, YTMND is indeed whitelisted.)

I'd still like the source code so I could try to throw in some webm support or something in there, and so we could still spawn some mini-YTMNDs. Still nostalgic for the 2007 version...

At least I backed up several hundred sites I found worthwhile.

don't lose hope.

Maybe max will hand over ownership of YTMND to somebody else who doesn't have a body pain disorder.

According to his post on Reddit, he's not really interested in selling it, but he didn't mention handing it over either. I'd imagine running it for so long would make giving it up a bit hard, I know I would have issues.

I mean, the website is more or less solid. Except for some expanded media support, reopening the forums, and perhaps drawing some more users in, YTMND is fine.

But yeah, hosting this stuff is expensive. Renting datacenter space isn't cheap, neither is maintaining stuff. No ads makes large websites like this unsustainable unless you're just loaded.

Even 4chan is having issues now. As derpy as both YTMND and 4chan *can be,* I hate to imagine both disappearing.

this here is the last YTMND site to ever be made.

I guess we will see no more sites after this because max doesn't want any drama over site creation.

When I decided to release an End Of YTMND music album, I left comments with a download link in some site profiles since we can at least still make comments during this time of YTMND's decline.

the download link for this album I'm talking about is a few comments below this one.

I'm going to miss this site and everyone on it so much. If I could do it all differently, I don't think I would have spent these past 11 years any differently than making YTMNDs. I love you all regardless of what you thought of me or how I treated you. No matter what happens to this site, we will all be YTMNDers for life and we will go on to have an impact on this world strongly inspired by our experiences here. Goodbye YTMND and all who inhabited it, you were the best waste of time an Internets could bring us.

If this really is the end, I just want to thank Max for creating this place. I had some really good times on this site. Its Golden Age was a thing of beauty- there was so much creativity, and so much craziness. And thanks to all the users who made so many awesome YTMNDs over the years. The internet won't see another place like this again.

Truly, we were the men now, dogs.

maybe max disabled site creation just to extract information from us.

Besides, some users don't even bother to leave comments in site profiles on YTMND.

as a Pokemon master, I see lots of people playing Pokemon Go. They are so focused using their mobile devices playing Pokemon Go, they don't think to use YTMND.

But I, LARCHMONT the Pokemon master of YTMND says we should make some Pokemon sites since Pokemon has made a comeback this year, just like many IRL fads that are 20 years old. The nostalgia of Pokemon is a good reason why Pokemon makes a good idea for future YTMND sites.

remember, gotta catch 'em all

here is a site you can view if you are in a bad mood!

restrainingorder.ytmnd.com

I find it sad to see that the good users get in trouble for using alts while the stalkers who expose personal info get away with their stalking.

here are the concerns we need to focus on:

dangerous stalkers who expose personal info > users outing others' real names > racism > 18+ shock imagery > empty threats > altvoting > alt accounts in general > users calling each other assholes > use of profanity >

many users can't even get their priorities straight on YTMND. So consider this a guide to understand that there are greater concerns than alt accounts, or altvoting.
